DIE HARD

Hugo dove into the driver’s seat like a madman, ripping the wheel from Chris’s lifeless grip.

“Get down!” he yelled.

Lacey hit the floor as bullets shattered the windows, whizzing past her. Some tore through the car, inches from her head. The car swerved, and Yip’s double, half her head gone, rolled next to her. No time to think—she hugged it tight as a shield.

“Toss me the gun!” Hugo shouted.

She spotted the pistol under the back seat. Crawling over the swaying car, she grabbed it and tossed it forward. The car jerked hard. The gun hit the back of the front seat and flew out the window.

“Fantastic!” she cursed.

With a loud bang, another car slammed into the back of the Vellfire. Hugo jerked the steering wheel, sending the Vellfire into a sharp spin. Lacey flipped, almost flying out of the car.

“You still with me?” Hugo shouted as the Vellfire straightened out.

“Guess so!” she yelled back.

The gunfire ceased. Peeking out the window, she saw they were now on the main road through Central. Behind them, several black SUVs had crashed and were burning. She quickly pieced it together—Hugo’s wild driving had made their pursuers crash into each other.

“What now?” she shouted over the wind whipping through the bullet-riddled car.

“Stay alive!” he answered bluntly.

With a loud crash, the Vellfire took a brutal hit on the left side. Hugo reacted instantly, keeping the car steady. Lacey glanced left and saw a black Range Rover tailing them closely. Hugo floored it, pushing the Vellfire to its limit. The Range Rover, with more horsepower, quickly closed in. As it rammed them again, Hugo slammed the brakes and spun the car into a 360-degree drift.

Caught off guard, the Range Rover missed, veered off the road, crashed into a storefront, and exploded in flames.

Under Hugo’s masterful control, the Vellfire barely slowed down and kept moving forward.

In the distance, a line of police cars blocked the road, lights flashing and officers armed and ready. Yip had clearly used GPM to mobilise her puppet cops.

Hugo slammed on the brakes and turned down another street without hesitation. But they were still surrounded. Yip could command as many puppets as she wanted. Taxis, private cars, and trucks came at the black Vellfire like kamikaze drivers, but Hugo’s expert driving dodged them all.

Things took a turn for the worse. A Chinese-made military SUV, known as a “tank,” appeared, its driver relentless and nearly forcing Hugo to stop several times. Desperate, Hugo drove straight into a nearby mall.

The black Vellfire crashed into a pillar inside the mall. Hugo and Lacey scrambled out, and she noticed a large bloodstain on his abdomen, blood dripping down his leg.

“You’re hurt?”

Hugo took off his jacket, tore off a sleeve, and tied it around his waist to stop the bleeding.

Behind them, the tank tried to follow but got stuck in the mall’s narrow passage. Hugo led Lacey to a hidden corner, watching as a giant figure climbed out of the tank and headed towards their Vellfire.

“Shit, I left Lily there!” Lacey gasped.
